Heartbleed: a pre-mortem eulogy

Do you remember the heartbleed problems the internet had? It’s been quite a while – but I remember the panic about the newest internet scare vividly. Part of me wishes the internet hadn’t made it past this heartbleed scare. Part of me wishes it had just died a quiet death, and gone away. Sure, we all would have grieved over the horrible and unexpected loss for a while. It would have shaken up our lives, leaving us not knowing what to do or where to go next. What to do with the countless hours of free time?
After a while we would have just carried on with our lives without you. It would have been difficult, but we would have found a way, somehow. We would have to reinvent our lives, and go back in time to figure out new ways of doing old things. What a unique opportunity that would have been. Maybe at some point we would find a better version of you, but some part of me tells me we wouldn’t.
