How to Avoid the Hidden Pitfalls of Amazon Subscribe & Save
Why 'Set and Forget' Could Be Costing You More Than You Think
Amazon’s Subscribe & Save program promises convenience and savings, but if you’re not careful, it can quickly turn into an expensive, cluttered headache. I thought it was just me, but many users, have run into issues like over-ordering, silent price increases, and an overwhelming flood of email confirmations that make it hard to keep track of changes. In this post, I’ll share my personal experience with Subscribe & Save and how you can manage your subscriptions effectively to avoid common pitfalls.
The Problem with Set-and-Forget
One of the biggest appeals of Subscribe & Save is automation. Set-and-forget, and you never run out of products you use frequently. You set up your favorite products—household essentials, supplements, or travel must-haves—and Amazon delivers them on a schedule of your choice. So far so good. The problem? Set and forget can backfire when you suddenly realize you’ve stockpiled way more than you need.
For example, once a month I use a cleaning tablets in my dishwasher and washing machine. Each bag comes with 3 tables, so enough supply for 3 months. On the first of the month, I run a tablet through each machine. Somehow, I’m now out of tables for my washing machine, but have 4 unopened bags of my dishwashing tablets (that’s a year’s worth of supply). Even if I forgot once or twice (unlikely), getting 12+ months extra is excessive, and defeats the entire program.
It looks like Amazon sometimes adjusts order quantities based on its “smart recommendations,” meaning you might end up receiving more than expected. If you’re not checking your orders regularly, this can lead to waste and unnecessary spending.
Solution: Regularly Review Your Subscriptions
To prevent over-ordering:
Go to Your Subscribe & Save Items (link here) and review your active subscriptions.
Double-check the quantity and frequency of each item.
Skip deliveries when you have enough stock.
Set a reminder in your calendar or to-do list (monthly or bi-monthly) to review your subscriptions manually. Don’t rely on Amazon’s emails to do so (more on that later).
Silent Price Increases: The Hidden Cost of Convenience
Amazon doesn’t lock in Subscribe & Save prices, which means that over time, you could be paying significantly more for the same product. My coffee has gone from $17 to just under $25 last month, so I cancelled it. These hidden price increases are buried in the sea of emails Amazon sends, making them easy to miss.
Even though I haven’t made a complete tally of how much I saved on individual items versus how much I wasted on over-ordering and price increases, my theory is that these may cancel each other out, leaving Jeff Bezos (of course) as the laughing third: The house always wins.
Solution: Stay on Top of Price Changes
Here’s how to avoid paying more than you expected:
Before each delivery, sort your Subscribe & Save items by next shipment date to check updated prices.
Cancel and resubscribe—sometimes new subscriptions have lower prices than existing ones.
Monitor emails strategically: Set up email filters for “price change” notifications so they don’t get lost in your inbox.
Amazon Email Overload: How to Stay Organized
Amazon sends a ton of emails, from order confirmations to reminders, making it easy to miss important updates. If you’ve set up a filter to sort all Amazon emails into a separate folder (like I have), you might end up with hundreds of unread messages, making it difficult to track changes.
Solution: Smart Email Management
Instead of filtering all Amazon emails, create a rule to only filter Subscribe & Save confirmations into a folder.
Set up a keyword-based filter for price change notifications so they stand out.
Consider using an email management tool like Unroll.Me to declutter your inbox.
Final Thoughts: Is Subscribe & Save Worth It?
If managed properly, Amazon Subscribe & Save can be a great way to save some money and ensure you never run out of essentials—especially if you’re frequently on the road and don’t want to worry about reordering products manually. However, without regular monitoring, it can easily lead to unnecessary spending and clutter.
By reviewing your subscriptions, staying on top of price changes, and managing your email notifications wisely, you can enjoy the benefits of Subscribe & Save without the headaches.
