How To Become An Industry Expert In Any Field
Malcolm Gladwell wrote about the ten thousand hours it takes to become an industry expert in any field. I’m going to assume, for argument’s sake, that you’ve done that legwork already. The real question is, how are you going to set yourself aside from the rest of your industry? Most entrepreneurs, and arguably even employees, compete solely on price alone. They don’t have anything else to set themselves aside from the crowd.
I don’t shop at Costco anymore, but that store is one of the few companies that should compete on price. You probably shouldn’t. Unless you’re into selling bulk products, you need a better angle than price alone. What’s your niche? How do you set yourself aside and become an industry expert?

“If you are a realtor and you write a book on How to Stage your Home to Prepare for a Sale, obviously any realtor can provide that knowledge and that insight. Any good realtor can provide that knowledge and that insight, but the one that has written a book about it will become the automatic expert on that topic. And it will make you an authority in that field. People will look up to you and come to you for questions.”
