Life Lessons From Being Stuck In A Rip Current: Embrace The Unknown
Ever lived near the ocean? I did – it’s one of the things I miss most in land-locked Calgary. The ocean is what feeds my soul – and even though having the Canadian Rocky Mountains nearby I do miss the salty air from time to time. Luckily through my travels I do tend to get my ocean-share from time to time, and on one of my recent trips I spotted a warning sign about getting stuck in a rip current.
If you’re not familiar with the concept, here’s what the dictionary says:
a relatively strong, narrow current flowing outward from the beach through the surf zone and presenting a hazard to swimmers.
In short: Tricky and potentially life threatening.
The key, if you ever get caught in one, is to not fight it. Don’t swim against it. You won’t last and the current will wear you out. Instead, let it take you and you’ll make it out. Just don’t panic (you’ll drown) and let the current take you to where it wants to take you. And then go from there. You might just make it.
