Do NOT Quit Your Job And Travel The World
Have you ever heard anyone say quit your job to go travel the world? I’m here to tell you the exact opposite. Don’t do it. Don’t quit your job to travel the world.
If you hate your job, sure enough, quit your job. If you want to travel – fine, go travel. My point is don’t do one in order to get to the other. Doing so is an indication of a lifestyle that’s not making you happy. If your job is making you miserable, do something different. If you want to travel, make that happen. Go travel – go see the world. There’s a lot of beautiful things out there to see.
My passion for photography was born in Canada’s beautiful Kananaskis Country. This is where I hosted my first travel photography workshop a couple of years ago. Today I’m here to tell you that if you’re looking to travel the world, you can do that. You can make that happen in the environment you’re in today. If you’re looking to quit your job and do something different you can make that happen as well.
Don’t Get Caught In Either-Or Thinking
Contrary to popular belief there’s no reason to connect the two together. If you quit your job, for a lot of people that means you’re ending your one source of income. No matter how you twist or turn it or what some people try to make you believe, you need a source of income to travel. You need a source of income to do anything that you’d like to do. I don’t care what country you’re living in – your life is gonna be easier if you have a source of income coming in. To cut that off would be the most irresponsible recommendation that you can make to anyone. But, by all means go travel as well. Follow your passions. Do what you love to do. Just don’t cut off the one source of income that you have.
But I Hate My Job
What do you do if your job is making you miserable? I’ve been there myself. If you’re not happy in the work you’re doing and you don’t feel fulfilled, there’s other ways to go about that. Quitting that job just to go travel the world on no income at all is for most people not the right recommendation to make. Anyone making that recommendation is very responsible. If anyone claims that they can make that work, dig a little deeper. See what they’re actually doing with their life. I’ve done extensive research into this when I interviewed people for my Happiness book. I spoke with people who claim to be traveling the world permanently. Often there was a hidden story behind their travels. Something they didn’t want to share with me right away, or at all. There’s a lot of so-called permanent nomads out there, who claim to live on no income whatsoever and travel all the time. What you’ll almost always find is a lot of these travel bloggers are living off a cruise ship income for example. Of course they’re traveling the world, but in the evenings they’re serving food on a cruise ship. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with that lifestyle. What’s wrong with that image is that they’re hiding what’s actually going and what they’re actually doing. They’re painting a false picture. A lie, if you will. They’re not actually living on no fixed income, but they’re working just another job as a waiter or waitress on a cruise ship. Again absolutely fine to do that, but just don’t hide the story pretending to be something you’re not.
Don’t Be A Financial Sponge
Another lie I see a lot is bloggers who claim they live off their blog and online “passive” income. What’s actually going on is they’re living off the income of their spouse, boyfriend or their girlfriend. They’re kind of leeching off of that income. They’re being a financial sponge and soak up all the income that comes to the family without making much of a contribution themselves. Doing that is fine for a little while. If you have a supporting person in your life that’s wonderful, but don’t be that financial sponge for too long. You want to be able to stand on your own two feet if you had to.
Do Something Different
Look for something else to do if your job is not making you happy. On my Living by Experience blog I share all the things that I’m doing to do something different. It’s about trying to create a creative source of income to generate passive income. For example by writing books, teaching online, and doing anything that I enjoy doing the most. If you want to read more about that I invite you to pick up a copy of my Happiness book. It’s all about happiness at work. Honestly the book is a purely hypothetical story. For a long time I was not happy in the work I was doing. In my book I share about how I went from making a lot of money to making zero money. I fell into the trap of thinking that quitting your job following the dream would work overnight. I learned the hard way it’s not an overnight fix. Nothing is. Creating and cultivating freedom is a process that you have to go through. Eventually you’ll get there.
I’m happy today to be sharing my story with you from Canada’s Kananaskis Country. It’s a beautiful environment, and if you want to come see it – come have a look. The world is your oyster and there’s a lot out there to see. If you want to travel the world do just that. If you want to quit your job you just do it. But make sure you have a plan. Don’t just jump from one thing to another. Don’t think that it’s going to be an overnight success bringing you overnight happiness, because it doesn’t work that way. If there’s anything I can do to support you in your journey please feel free to reach out to me. That’s why I love the work I’m doing: to support fellow travelers, to support authors, and to support creative entrepreneurs in their journey to complete freedom. This is why I wrote my Freedom Project books.
Travel safe.
