The Real Power of Travel: More Than Just Statistics
There's lies, damn lies, and then there's statistics. Please, once and for all, let's forget about finding the "best" place in the world to live.
There are lies, damn lies, and statistics.
This is one of my favourite sayings, and it’s especially true when it comes to rankings of the "best place in the world to live." There’s blogs and Instagrams accounts full of these (more or less arbitrary) lists based on some “number”.
While these rankings often prioritize wealth and amenities, I've witnessed firsthand that many people living below the western poverty line are far less stressed and burnt out than we are in the western world. So who’s winning here, really? Instead of being consumed by stress and the pursuit of money, they foster genuine connections with friends and family. Experiencing this, to me, is the true transformative power of travel.
Financial Freedom and Peace of Mind
Traveling has also taught me the importance of getting your financial life in order. It's crucial to stop scraping by and start taking control of your finances. In today's world, if you're not winning, you're losing. And let me tell you, paradise is very nice.
Embracing a millionaire mindset is key to achieving financial freedom. I've created an online course on this topic, which you can preview for free. If you're ready to take the first step towards financial independence, check out the course here. Remember, your financial health directly impacts your overall well-being and ability to enjoy life to the fullest. Yes, to a degree, money does buy happiness.1
Digital Detox: Embrace Airplane Mode
Here's a travel tip that works wonders at home too: airplane mode. Have you ever tried putting your phone into vacation mode to help detox from the digital world? I often leave my phone on airplane mode when I travel, not just because I’m cheap, but because it allows me to truly be in the moment and enjoy every experience.
I love to text and stay connected, which is why I recently discovered eSIMs. These allow me to stay online and in touch while traveling without needing to keep my actual phone number active. It's the best of both worlds—maintaining communication and enjoying a digital detox when needed.
Get Into Action (or not): Be Present
Even while on vacation, it's easy to get caught up in capturing the perfect selfie or staying connected online, but the most memorable moments come when you're fully present.
Travel is about more than seeing new places; it's about experiencing life differently. It's about making real connections, finding peace, and being present in every moment. So next time you travel, or even if you're just at home, try putting your phone on airplane mode and see how it changes your experience. You might be surprised at how much more connected you feel to the world around you.

I cover the topic in more detail in my Happiness book. John C Parkin, author of the F**k It books, said “F**k It, (…) can money really buy 80% of your happiness? Errmmm, how does it work for me? Whatever, I get the feeling that, for the small price of this book, people will be buying a significantly higher % chance of freedom and happiness.”
