Traveling with Friends: How to Make It Fun for Everyone
Traveling solo has a freedom and sense of adventure all its own, but exploring with friends can add a whole new dimension. Yet, let’s face it—group travel can be tricky.
While small group travel can deepen friendships and create some great memories, it can also lead to stress and misunderstandings if things aren’t planned right. My travel time is sacred, so when I do travel with friends, I’m looking for it to be a meaningful experience, not just tagging along for the perks.1
Traveling solo is all about freedom—setting your own pace, deciding your own destinations, and exploring exactly how you want. Traveling with friends brings its own kind of excitement: shared laughter, inside jokes, and the joy of experiencing new places together. But it’s not all fun and games. Small group travel can bring its fair share of challenges. Each person’s travel style, budget, and goals come into play, and if things aren’t managed well, stress can quickly creep in.
What could possibly go wrong…
My travel time is sacred: something special, a break from the ordinary. On top of that, I have a social limit when it comes to constant togetherness. Some downtime alone lets me fully recharge and appreciate the journey. I’ve experienced trips where the group didn’t communicate well or where I felt more like a tour guide than a traveler. These experiences can make or break a trip.
It’s all too easy for plans to go sideways when messages get crossed or people struggle to stay in touch. I’ve been on trips where friends didn’t know what time to meet up, plans changed unexpectedly, or someone went their own way without updating the group.
This gets even harder when you’re not staying in accommodations that are close together. While it might seem fine to book different places, even a short distance between hotels can complicate things. I’ve had trips where friends were staying far apart, making spontaneous meetups difficult and turning each day’s plans into a logistical headache that just ate into our time together.
Here we go with the goals again…
Sometimes a single person can become the de facto tour guide who ends up doing all the logistical planning or communication. While it’s natural for one friend to know more about the area (or have access to travel perks that help everyone out), it’s their vacation too.
Everyone has a different idea of the perfect vacation—whether that’s visiting every tourist hot spot, relaxing on the beach, or hitting the nightlife scene. Or maybe you want it all. Either way, I’ve been on trips where friends were on totally different pages, and someone always ended up feeling left out, either missing what they wanted to see or feeling rushed through experiences they did care about.
All of this (and more) can lead to confusion, wasted time, and sometimes even end friendships, while you’re trying to keep everyone on the same page. The best friendships (and relationships) can struggle or even end while on vacation, making the remaining part of the trip feel more like a chore than an adventure.
Despite these potential pitfalls, traveling with (the right) friends can be a rewarding experience. There are ways to make sure it’s fun and enjoyable for everyone involved. Below you’ll find some practical tips to help you make the most out of your next small group adventure.
