What Happened To My Social Media Feed When I Started Running
Breaking Free from the Algorithm: Why I’m Continuing to Choose Real Connections Over Social Media
Ever noticed how social media algorithms take an estimated guess about your interests and then bombard you with unsolicited advice? For me, the moment I started diving into long-distance running a few years ago, my Instagram1 feed quickly transformed into a flood of running “tips and tricks”—most of which, quite frankly, were not helpful. Even worse, they were downright wrong. It got me thinking about how we all receive so much unsolicited advice on everything, ranging from life and business to running2, often from well-meaning but ultimately off-mark sources.
“An Experiment of One”
A running coach once said, “you’re an experiment of one”. Most gurus and “coaches” out there are trying to sell you a system that worked for them, back in the day. You have to figure out what works for you. It's not just about running. The same applies to most (if not all) other areas of life. The opinions out there assume they know what’s best for us, but often, it's just noise. What if instead of unsolicited advice, we could see more genuine stories and experiences from real people?
Social media can make us feel connected, but sometimes it falls short when it comes to genuine, meaningful interaction. It’s easy to get lost in a sea of posts and comments that often lack depth or personal touch. As a result, we rarely see our lives as they really are. Rather, we compare ourselves to distorted stories that make us emotionally unhappy. I’ve realized that what I want more than endless advice is real, authentic connection. I want to see and hear your stories, not just the curated highlights or generic tips.
Let’s take this beyond social media
According to Facebook, my last story only got 14% views. Not great, and a stark reminder that I’m putting time and energy into something that’s largely controlled by algorithms. I see so many people make a serious effort in building their social media profile and followers, only to find out they can’t reach those people. Unless you cough up advertising dollars, of course. I’m not a fan of this idea that a (financial) algorithm gets to decide who sees what I share. Over time, this model means only the guy with the deepest pockets will be left
Why do they even call it “social” media when so much of the behaviour it encourages feels anything but social? I’m starting to feel like it’s time to step away from the noise. I’m equally torn between deleting all social media and booking a trip somewhere. (Is it too early to start planning travel for next year?)3
One thing’s for sure: I’m done supporting or promoting brands and accounts that don’t engage or reciprocate. Social media, like friendship, should be a two-way street. Real friends text. Please, just text me to stay in touch outside the control of Zuck’s algorithms.
Let’s keep in touch outside of the control of algorithms. Whether it’s sending updates, wishing each other happy birthdays, or just saying hello, real connections happen when we take the conversation offline.
If you want to stay in touch in a more authentic way, I’d love for you to text me directly at 604-210-8668. Let’s move beyond the noise and share real stories. I can’t wait to hear from you!4

I love the idea of social media, I’m just not a big fan of the companies that run it.
I use running as an example, but really you can insert any topic you’re interested in and everything from this article holds true.
I didn’t think so either. Check out my revamped Travel Revolution site when you have a minute and let me know what you think. The curriculum is all updated too, by the way. If you already signed up, you’ll find the new material in your student dashboard.
Why texting, specifically? Glad you asked. This page explains it as few people seem to believe this is actually my phone number. Most importantly: texting is not about collecting likes or shares; it’s about having real conversations that matter. When you text me, you’re not just another follower in a crowded feed—you’re a real person with your own stories, insights, and experiences.
