Why I explore and travel like a cat
I’m a “do it yourself” kind of person when it comes to exploring. I do my research, and based on my list of things to do I’ll venture out to go see most of what I want to see on my own.
For most of those, a tour guide of any sorts is really not necessary. Even when I’m not familiar with a destination I usually just roam a few blocks around my hotel aimlessly to make myself familiar, and then on subsequent days attempt a self-guided walking tour or two, to explore a bit further. Lonely Planet almost always includes great walking tours for every imaginable destination.
Those self-guided walks are a great way to find hidden gems that I wouldn’t have necessarily found on my own, without the guide book.
In a way I’m like a cat that is let out of the house for the first time. At first they’re a little scared and tend to run back to the safety of the house, but as the hours and days progress it’ll stray further and further, getting more excited about the adventures the day will bring.
